In Simple Things
A friend once asked me, upon exiting the tour of a huge cathedral...
"Wasn't that impressive? Couldn't you just feel the presence of God in the majesty of the place!?"
I replied honestly, and not without some small bit of confused sadness...
"You know, my friend, I found more of the presence of God when we walked the dog down by the river last evening and we watched the children playing, fed the birds, listened to their song... I find God fully alive in the simple things... you know?"
That was many years ago and still, that conversation rings in my mind like it was ten minutes ago. It was a completely honest statement and yet, for many years afterward, I wondered why I felt that way. Having given it much thought, the only way I can explain the way I feel is like this...
In the huge cathedrals, the majestic artifacts, pomp and ceremony, I find so much human effort to reach out to God.
In nature, I find so much of God's effort to reach out to humankind. It is there that I am most comfortably able to respond. And it is there I am able to enter the purest of all prayer... the quiet celebration of spirit meeting Spirit.
